Where is Manipal located?

Mainpal is situated 5 km (3.1 miles) from the temple city of Udupi, and is 65 km (40 miles) north of Mangalore. Manipal was previously part of the Shivalli village panchayat. The name is derived from Mannu palla anglicised to Manipal. Mannu means mud and Palla means lake in Tulu Language. This 400 metre lake, after which Manipal is named, is located in the middle of the town, and offers boating facilities. Manipal was once a barren hill with few trees. This hill was transformed to a University town by Dr.T. M. A. Pai starting in the 1950s.

How can I get there?

Buses ply between Mangalore and Manipal every 20 minutes. The nearest airport is Mangalore Airport (formerly Bajpe Airport), which is located around 50 km (31 mi) from Manipal. There are many national and international flight carriers operating from this airport. The nearest railway station is Udupi Railway station at Indrali (about 4 km (2.5 mi) from Manipal) on Konkan railway route.

Many buses, both KSRTC and private, ply between Manipal and Bangalore every day and night. AC Volvo buses ply between Mangalore and Manipal every 30 minutes and you will find Express buses to many places every 5 minutes.

What is the climate like?

Between June and August, it is heavy monsoon season, with precipitation ranging from 50–80 cm (20–31 in). March to May, the temperature peaks at 35 °C (95 °F). At other times, the weather is tropical, approximating 27 °C (81 °F).


Manipal is home to Manipal University, which has 19 colleges, ranging from the fields of business, engineering and health sciences.
